The Built for Shopify badge is the app store’s quality mark — and one of the few ranking factors that’s binary: you have it or you don’t.
Ranking: badged apps get a placement bump in search — compounding free traffic. Conversion: the badge is a trust signal merchants recognize on your card and page, lifting click-through and Add-app rates. Ads: the same trust improves paid click-through, quietly lowering your cost per install.
The requirements cluster into: embedded app built on Shopify’s design system (App Bridge, Polaris patterns), performance bars (admin load speed, Core Web Vitals contribution), quality metrics (ratings, review recency, support responsiveness), and API/billing hygiene. Most are engineering discipline rather than product changes — and notably, the embedding requirement overlaps exactly with what converts better anyway: embedded flows keep merchants inside admin, in a familiar UI, with friction you control.
If you’re already embedded and your metrics are healthy, the badge is low-hanging fruit — often weeks of cleanup. If you’re not embedded, treat embedding as the project (with the badge as a bonus), because it pays through conversion regardless. Pre-product-market-fit apps should wait: reviews and ratings requirements punish immature products.
Badge → better ranking → more installs → more reviews → better ranking. It’s a flywheel entry ticket. Assess it during any serious app store SEO effort.
